HAPPY NATIONAL COFFEE DAY!

Nothing kick-starts your day like a cup of Joe. But did you know that adding coffee to your beauty regimen can improve the feel and look of your face, hands, and body?

Many skin enthusiasts and beauty bloggers are raving over the benefits of using coffee topically on your face and body.

Here are 5 of the benefits associated with applying Coffee topically, that we love at By Justine:

1. Anti-Aging:

Products rich in Anti-oxidants are thought to be excellent at reversing and minimizing the effects of aging. Anti-oxidants corral free radicals and metallic ions to protect our body and cells from premature aging and destruction that occurs from exposure to natural elements such as heat, light, and moisture. Coffee is super-packed with anti-oxidants such as Caffeic Acid, Caffeine, and Chlorogenic Acid. Caffeic Acid is known to boost collagen levels and help to prevent the premature aging of cells. Caffeine is believed to increase and improve blood flow and collagen production. Which in turn creates firmer looking skin and aids in fighting wrinkles, fine lines, and other signs of photoaging.

2. Cellulite Reduction:

Cellulite is a condition in which the skin is characterized as having a dimpled or lumpy appearance. It typically occurs on the thighs, buttocks, and hips. The exact cause of cellulite is unknown. However, many experts believe that cellulite occurs where there is decreased blood flow to connective tissue under the skin. The decreased blood circulation in that area leads to less oxygen flow, which results in reduced collagen production and enlarged fat cells. Reduced collagen production leads to weakened and less elastic skin. As the enlarged fat cells protrudes through the connective tissue under the skin, the dimple effect is created.  Once you have cellulite it is believed to be very difficult, if not impossible to get rid of.

However, there are natural remedies such as coffee, that are believed to help reduce the appearance of cellulite. A 2008 research study found that application of skin products containing caffeine to areas effected by cellulite overtime showed a reduction in cellulite fat cells by up to 17%.  The Caffeine content present in coffee is believed to aid in cellulite reduction due to its ability to dilate blood vessels beneath the skin, which helps to increase and improve blood flow.  Increased blood flow, leads to increased oxygen flow and collagen production, which can in turn lead to stronger, tighter skin and a reduction in the appearance of cellulite.

3. Anti-Inflammation/ Skin Calming:

Applying a coffee scrub is thought to be a great remedy for treating inflamed and irritated skin, due in large part to its contents of Caffeine and Chlorogenic Acid (CGA).

Caffeine and Chlorogenic Acid (CGA) have natural anti-inflammatory properties which help to reduce redness, swelling, puffiness, or inflammation.

As mentioned above, caffeine is believed to stimulate the skin, constricting small blood vessels, and  increasing and improving blood flow and oxygen circulation. By helping the skin to naturally tighten, caffeine helps to reduce fluid retention and puffiness. When applied in a topical scrub on the face coffee is believed to help reduce the build up of blood and fluid under the eyes, decreasing dark circles and dark shadows.

4. Acne and Eczema Prevention and Treatment:

Acne is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that can cause dark spots, pimples, redness, and blackheads. While is occurs most often naturally during puberty, it's cause is also linked to the result of clogged pores caused by dead skin cells, oil, dirt, or other debris. Eczema characterizes a group of skin conditions that cause skin to become red, itchy, dry, scaly, discolored, inflamed or irritated. Eczema can be caused by a variety of factors including environment, genetics, and dry skin.

Coffee scrubs are lauded as an excellent source for fighting, treating,  and preventing acne and eczema breakouts. Coffee grounds provide a natural and gentle source of exfoliation to remove dead skin cells, dirt, oil, and debris that clog pores and increase the likelihood of acne outbreaks. The Chlorogenic Acids (CGA's) in coffee also provide anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bacterial properties that help to reduce inflammation and redness, while also helping to prevent future outbreaks by fighting bacterial, fungal, and viral infections.

5. Skin Brightener/Toner:

Coffee is also a natural skin brightener and toner.

Caffeine grounds boost blood circulation and draws out excess fluid from skin cells, creating tighter and firmer skin. Coffee also contains Caffeic Acid and Vitamin C which boost collagen levels. In return, applying coffee topically increases skin tightness and elasticity. When applied to the skin, caffeine also acts as a natural astringent, reducing the size of pores and creating visibly toner and firmer skin.
